Description

The Wall of Avila is the most emblematic and characteristic monument of the city, which is the capital of the homonymous province, within the Autonomous Community of Castilla y León. Construction began in the mid-11th century. with an eminently defensive character and was reinforced in later restorations. For its construction, remains of the Roman necropolis that existed previously, civil constructions and stones from the predecessor Roman and Visigothic walls were used. The stone is mostly granite, but brick, mortar and lime were also used. Along its perimeter we find monuments embedded in it, such as the Cathedral or the Episcopal Palace, as well as civil constructions. Currently the 2,516 m that make up its perimeter, its 9 gates and its 87 towers are preserved in perfect condition. In front of each of its gates, churches were built, but nowadays all 9 are not preserved. The Wall was declared a National Monument in 1884 and, in 1985, UNESCO declared the city of Ávila a World Cultural Heritage. The Wall of Ávila has three routes that can be visited at the top, one of them accessible to people with disabilities.
