Description

The Almadén and Idrija mines represent the greatest examples of mercury deposits in the world, as well as the most important collections of technology related to the extraction of mercury that have survived to the present day. The importance of these two sites lies not only in the material they extracted but also in the key role that mercury played in obtaining silver from the raw ore, which was used from the 16th century onwards in the mines of America. All these reasons led to the inclusion in the World Heritage List of this international nomination presented jointly by Spain and Slovenia during the World Heritage Committee held in 2012.

Throughout history, these mines have brought both nations closer, favouring economic, technological and cultural exchanges and showing a complementarity in the supply of mercury to America that took place during the Modern Age.

In the specific case of Almadén, located in the province of Ciudad Real, mining dates back to times before the arrival of the Romans in the Iberian Peninsula, as is attested to by the numerous vestiges found in the area surrounding the present-day city. Its long history made it an example for many other mines around the world and there is a specific period in its history of special interest that coincides with the appearance of amalgamation methods for obtaining silver (1555). From that moment on, the flow of mercury between the Almadén and Idrija mines and America began, and with it the reciprocal exchange of techniques to improve the mines. As time went by, there were fluctuations in the extraction of mercury, due to new uses or indirect problems, but the Almadén mines continued to be active until the present day, when the current legislation related to this mineral has led to its closure. This fact has led to its transformation, turning this economic resource into a heritage resource of the first order.
