Description

Located in a vast mountainous area in the centre of the island of Gran Canaria, the Risco Caído site is characterised by a topography of cliffs, ravines and volcanic formations in a landscape of rich biodiversity.

Its territory includes a considerable number of remains of troglodytic dwellings, cisterns and granaries, whose antiquity shows the presence of an indigenous island culture that evolved autonomously from the arrival of the North African Berbers at the beginning of our era until the conquest of the archipelago of the Canary Islands by the Spaniards in the 15th century.

The troglodytic remains also include some caves dedicated to ritual practices, as well as the temples or "almogarenes" of Risco Caído and Roque Bentayga where ceremonies related to the seasons of the year were held. It is possible that these two "almogarenes" are related to a possible worship of the stars and the "Mother Earth".
