Description

The Sierra de la Tramontana, located along the northwest coast of Mallorca, is a rugged mountainous region with the highest peaks of the island. Its cultural landscape, shaped by man over the centuries, was declared a World Heritage Site in 2011.

In this limestone setting, inhabited from the most remote antiquity to the present day, human beings have had to adapt to its natural resources, creating a living environment where fortresses, sanctuaries, villages, terraces and irrigation channels leave their mark on the landscape.

Its geographical location, far from the mainland and on the border between Africa and Europe, was the cause of a strong isolation and successive invasions. With each conqueror, a new culture was introduced into the area and all of them have left their mark on the Sierra de la Tramontana. A clear example of this can be found in the archaeological sites, the burial caves in Muleta, the prehistoric talayots of "Sa casa des Moro", the "cases de possessió", the Roman bridge of Pollença or the peculiar combination of the hydraulic systems applied to irrigation of Islamic origin and the olive and vine cultivation systems of Christian origin.

Man, at the service of this environment, which is highly conditioned by the scarce resources it offers, has achieved an intense transformation based on the construction of terraces on the slopes for the cultivation of olive trees, the extraction, channelling and conduction of water to achieve orchards and irrigation areas, and the consolidation of an entire agricultural system in a mountainous area based on the use of dry stone and the intelligent management of the territory. However, the paths created are not all tangible, but rather a whole intangible structure related to the environment and its uses has been cemented and has been passed down to us in numerous manifestations.

With the declaration of the Serra de la Tramuntana as a World Heritage Site, the value of the joint action of man and nature in this dynamic reality of great fragility is highlighted.
