Description

The remains of settlement in the municipality date back to the Bronze Age with numerous sites from the Iberian period.
During the centuries of Muslim domination, there is documentary evidence of the existence of a farmhouse.
The reconquest took place before 1238, as it is recorded that James I donated the town and its castle to the Abbot of Fuentclara in 1238.
Subsequently, the nobleman Raimundo de Toris would hold the title to the manor. In 1379, he sold it to the couple formed by Jofré de Blanes and Caterina de Bonastre, who included it in their territories that formed the barony of Segart.
In 1482, it was bought by Juan Castellsens de Villarrasa and later passed back to the crown.
The expulsion of the Moors in 1609 meant that the town was almost uninhabited, which is why three years later it was repopulated with people of Catalan origin.
The castle is located near the village of Albalat, on the top of a hill.
The tunnel of an old railway line runs underneath it, next to the Sagunto-Segorbe motorway.
The castle is located on a rocky hill of the same name, some distance from the town. It is in ruins, although there are still many demolished elements of its walls, remains of auxiliary constructions and part of what must have been some of its defensive towers.
Remains of Iberian, Roman and medieval pottery have been found.
