Description

The foundation of the convent required a dispensation from King Spain, since between Alberique and the convent of La Alcudia there was not the minimum distance required between convents. The foundation had the support of the population, but most of the local clergy opposed it.

From what is recorded in the conventual account books, it is known that the community was not numerous, being generally composed of five or six friars. However, it must have exerted some influence on the local youth, since some of the members were sons of Alberique, distinguishable in the books because they put Alberic or Alberique after their names.

The convent of Alberique was poor, even by Franciscan standards of sobriety. This was reflected in the list of the furnishings of November 24, 1851, made on the occasion of the change of bursar of the parish of San Lorenzo, where the conventual goods had gone.

The convent was suppressed on August 25, 1835, by the application of the decree of July 25 that suppressed all the convents of less than twelve friars. Once the building was disentailed and the Capuchins exclaustrated, the building was to be used as a prison for the judicial district of Alberique, following the instructions of a royal order that affected many convents in the province. However, the town council initiated a file that finally led to a new royal order that awarded the property to the Alberique consistory to establish primary schools there.

A report of 1871 sent by the mayor of the municipality to the Economic Administration of the Province of Valencia, states that the building was then used as an elementary school, music academy, municipal deposit of prisoners, barracks of the Civil Guard and theater-casino.

At the beginning of the 21st century, only the church remains, which is no longer used for worship and is in the process of being adapted as a cultural space.
