Description

Initially the original simple building was maintained, although after the repopulation of the place with old Christians it was restructured in different stages.

There is little information about the primitive church. It is known that in addition to the main altar it had five other altars and that these, as described in the pastoral visit of 1644, were arranged without any separation between them, possibly to take advantage of the single nave of the church. For that reason the visitor decreed the closing of the main altar by its sides and that the same operation be carried out with the altars of Our Lady of the Rosary, Christ, the Conception, St. Michael, St. Anton and the souls. In 1649 the visitor urged the authorities to accelerate the works of reform of the temple, since only those of the chapel of the Rosary were advancing rapidly.

On February 2, 1695, a general meeting was called to discuss the work on the church, which was attended by the local civil authorities and almost all the clergy residing in the town. On October 11 of that year, the construction of the new church began. The contribution of a certain amount by the local lord for the works, decided the local authorities to collect a census for the same purpose. In 1698, the works continued and on May 22nd, an account was rendered to the city council, proposing a financial operation to cover the expenses. On May 17, 1701, it was decided to demolish the remains of the previous temple and on May 23 the board of works was renewed. On July 31, the city council decided to move the Santísimo Cristo to the new church.

The altarpiece of the main altar was finished in 1724 and on August 4, 1729 the construction of a bell tower was contracted with the master builder Juan Navarro for one hundred pounds.

It is a large building of good proportions, with a square bell tower built in stone and reddish brick. The interior of the church is based on a large nave covered by a barrel vault and with side chapels on both sides. Among these the Chapel of the Communion stands out.
