Description

The cistern is located in the Plaza de la Constitución in the current town hall building. This cistern was used to deposit the water that supplied all the residents of the municipality throughout the year. It was filled from the Benager irrigation channel. The cistern was filled in the month of January when the water was at its coldest; a sluice was opened in the street of Santa Bárbara and the water passed through a small grille into the tank. It was only opened in summer, when the tank was emptied to clean and disinfect it with lime.
From 1957 onwards, drinking water was installed in the cistern, which gradually ceased to be used and was closed in 1960.
The cistern was built by the monks of the monastery of Poblet, lords of the town of Aldaia since the 13th century.
The building has two parts: the stairs, which lead to the fountain where the water flows outside; and the cistern itself, or tank where the water was stored.
There is only one access, located at street level, which leads down to the fountain from where the water is loaded.
In 1997, it was integrated into the town hall building and refurbished for public access.
