Description

The monastery of San Jerónimo de Cotalba, located in the municipality of Alfauir, is privately owned and has been open to the public since 2005 by agreement with the Department of Culture.
The monastery was founded in 1388 on the old Moorish settlement of Cotalba. It belonged to the order of the Hieronymites until 1835, when the disentailment took place. The benefactor of the work was the duqye Alfons "El Vell" (Duke of the Crown of Aragon). The architectural construction is framed within the Gothic Mudejar Renaissance style, XIV-XVII century, with most of the spaces in the eighteenth century in the Baroque style. It was declared of Cultural Interest in 1994. Visitors can admire its entrance courtyard, with the Gothic tower, orange tree courtyard, Mudejar cloister, old church with Baroque chapel, old chapter house with the image of the Virgen de la Salud, the oil mill with the fresco of the Holy Supper by Father Nicolás Borrás (Holy Supper of the school of Juan de Juanes), stables, old kitchen of the friars, as well as the impressive romantic gardens and the Gothic aqueduct that surrounds it.
