Description

The entire population of Algemesí takes part, one way or another, in the dances and rituals than escort the processions of La Mare de Déu de la Salut (Our Lady of Health) every 7th and 8th of September. The feast commemorates the find of an image of Our Lady originally dated in 1247. The first recorded mention of the celebration was in 1610. The festivities start with a novenary. The night before the first procession, Nit del Retorn, the bells sound all night long. A charachteristic toll announces the first procession in the evening. Groups of children represent biblical scenes and open the way to the so called muixeranges, human towers dressed with striped clothes that grow to the sound of dolçaina and tabal, flutes and drums.
The procession follows with various dances in groups of different ages and clothing: Bastonets, la Carxofa, els Arquets and Bolero. The religious part of the procession includes various biblical charachters. Finally, La Mare de Déu is protected by the Tornejants, a group that practices a very peculiar warriors dance.
All the groups gather inside the basilica and await the arrival of Our Lady. When the image reaches the Main Square they all come out to receive her with their different dances all together. The moment is strictly magic.
The scene is repeated three times, the evening of the 7th September and in the morning and evening of the 8th September.
The implication of the neighbours of Algemesí was recognized as Inmaterial Heritage of Humanity by Unesco in 2011 and is considered a model of traditional Valencian Festivities.
