Description

SAMARUC'S LAGOON

With a surface area of 12,000 m2, it consists of a large lagoon surrounded by vegetation, an area of more superficial water and a network of channels separated by flecks.
Its most illustrious inhabitant and the one that gives its name to the lagoon is the Samaruc (Spanish Valencia), a small native fish (between 5 and 7 cm) that is only found in a few Valencian wetlands and is in serious danger of extinction, such that its disappearance would mean a significant loss for the world's fish fauna.
The Samaruc lagoon is located in the northeast of the municipality of Algemesí, about 10 km from the town centre, in the area traditionally known as "La Punta", in the "El Barranco" district.

History

In the municipality of Algemesí the natural areas are linked to water, either in its fluvial aspect at the confluence of the rivers Júcar and Magro to the "Xopera", or in the calm waters of the Marjal and the wetlands in the part of the term included in the Albufera Natural Park.
In order to contribute to the recovery of Samaruc and other endangered native species in the Albufera Natural Park, an agreement was signed in 1995
between Algemesi City Council and the Ministry of the Environment to create the Samaruc Lagoon. The basis of this agreement was the LIFE Project "Creation of a network of reserves for Samaruc in wetlands".
The Lagoon communicates with a main channel that supplies water to a steeply sloping area where the water level is lower. The purpose of the Lagoon is not only the recovery of Samaruc, but it is also an ecosystem in which other endangered native fauna species are periodically reintroduced.

Fauna

Since its creation in 1996 and until today, a total of 46,000 samarucs, 36,200 punxosets (Gasterosteus aculeatus), 7,400 rhubarb (Colbitis paludica) and 150 bavoses de riu (Blennius fluviatilis) have been released into the lagoon. All these specimens come from the two fish farms of the Regional Ministry of the Environment located in El Palmar and Polinyà del Xúquer, where endangered and protected species are reproduced. The rest of the fauna of the Lagoon, birds, mammals, amphibians, etc., are found there spontaneously, that is, without having been introduced.

Flora

With regard to the flora, it should be said that in 2002, the Lagoon was declared a Flora Microreserve. In the Algemesí Lagoon we can see species that are in the Valencian Catalogue of Threatened Flora Species such as the white water lily (Nymphaea alba) in danger of extinction; the four-leaf clover or Agret de agua (marsilea quadrifolia) and the trencadalla (Kosteletzkya pentacarpos), all of which are considered vulnerable.
