Description

Algemesí inaugurated the Museu Valencià de la Festa on September 6, 2002. This museum is located in the convent of San Vicente, a Renaissance building built by the Dominicans in 1590. Among its most outstanding parts is the one dedicated to the history, clothing and music of one of the most representative and significant intangible monuments of Valencian’s culture: "La Festa de la Mare de Déu de la Salut", recogniced as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by Unesco. The permanent exhibition tries to bring the visitor closer to what happens in Algemesí every September, when the streets of the old town are transformed into an unrepeatable setting where you can enjoy a unique cultural and religious manifestation. The Fiesta –with more than seven centuries of history– has been enriched, over time, with the inclusion of dances of religious and profane sense, which evolve with the traditional sound of the dulzaina and the tabalet. Among other 60 melodies, the sound of the Muixeranga d’Algemesí is the most recognized. It opens the party, recreating the movements of one of the oldest dances in Europe, and accompanies the evolution of the different human towers built by more than 400 muixeranguers. Along with the Muixeranga, the Tornejants, a reverential medieval dance, also stand out for their spectacular nature; Los Misterios y Martirios, short theatrical pieces of medieval origin that open the profane part of the processional parade; then the Bastonets, Carxofa, Arquets, Pastoretes and Llauradores dances, which give way to the religious part in which the biblical representation and the presence of the Volants, knights carrying the litters of the Mare de Déu stand out.
