Description

Surrounded by orange groves, the Torre Luengo is a watchtower from which to control the orchards of Alginet and the surrounding area. Its owners were the ones who introduced peanut cultivation in the Ribera Alta region. The Luengo Tower in Alginet is an example of Valencian bourgeois architecture from the 19th century.

Located in the La Horteta district, in the centre of an old large estate, it is made up of a building in the style of a farmhouse, a singular tower and a garden area. This tower is next to a building dating from the 18th century or earlier. It is a free-standing tower, built according to the civil engineering canons of the second half of the 19th century. It has been carefully executed and its design shows certain similarities with contemporary properties built by the Valencian aristocracy or the Valencian gentry.

Its location in a relatively isolated area of the municipality of Alginet meant that the chapel was used for centuries by the inhabitants of the surrounding area.

The owners of the tower, the Luengo family, had a great influence on the history of Alginet. Juan Baltasar Luengo introduced the cultivation of peanuts in the Ribera Alta region. For several decades, this farmhouse represented the largest landholding in the municipality.
