Description

Vilella Castle, known locally as Castillo de la Sierra,1 was built on a large rounded rock with vertical walls at an altitude of more than 400 meters. It is located on a large rounded rock at an altitude of 142 meters about two kilometers northwest of the town, overlooking the strategic Llautó pass. The fortress must have been built during the Almohad period, in the late twelfth or early thirteenth century, being therefore a late building contemporary with the neighboring Castle of Xio. In the second half of the 13th century, it is mentioned in a few documents collected by Bazzana and Guichard. At the time of the Aragonese conquest, there was a garrison in the castle dependent on the Castle of Bairén, operational during the Mudejar revolt led by Al-Azraq, being a castle-shelter of the last Andalusian period. The Vilella castle has an enclosure of medium dimensions, 2 038 square meters in area, with a simple structure formed by a fence of rectilinear segments that define an interior space. On the northern part on the slope is the access to the enclosure. This entrance is formed by a rectangular tower about four meters high, with two opposing doors to make access difficult. The tower is built with lime mortar walling, the dominant technique in the construction of the castle. In the east direction, the wall continues only a few meters, having disappeared much of its layout in the east and southeast sectors, precisely in the highest and steepest area of the rock where the castle sits. In the northwest part, the fortification is defined by large walls of ramparts approximately 1.20 meters thick that continue in the direction of the entrance tower, and in the interior of the enclosure no structures are apparently preserved.
