Description

The town of Alpuente is located south of the Sierra de Javalambre. Historically it is attributed to Alpuente a Roman origin, its name would come from the Latin Altum Pontum, which could refer to the arches of the aqueduct that is in the term or an ancient bridge access to the castle now disappeared.

Of its splendid past remains the castle, whose ruins stand on an impressive rock overlooking the town, the remains of its walled enclosure, which retains several gates and towers of the fourteen that had: the main tower crenellated, enclosure where the old alhama was, which is still preserved in good condition, the floor was the place where the market met hiring and what would be the City Council. Attached to this building is the hall where it seems that James I held the Cortes of the Kingdom of Valencia, and very close, going towards the church is the palace where this king came to stay.

The area at the top of the castle is older and was surrounded by walls of which several towers are still preserved. This enclosure located under the castle, being elongated. Its envelope would go along the streets Amargura, Plaza Joaquín Cervera and Escuelas. The main door is preserved on which stands a fortified building that defended this access.
