The Sanctuary of the Cueva Santa is located near Montmayor. The cave, also known as “del Latonero”, was used as a refuge by shepherds. One of them must have left an image of Our Lady there. Years later, the Virgin appeared to another shepherd who was spending the night in the cave, and she pointed out where he could find the image. The image of the elderly Virgin Mary wearing a widow’s costume which, despite the humidity in the chasm, has hardly deteriorated after the years.
At the bottom of the chasm, a modest chapel dedicated to "Ntra. Sra. de la Cueva Santa", built at the end of the seventeenth century with thick walls. Next to the grotto, on the outside, there is an inn whose antiquity dates back to the 16th century. Popular lodging for pilgrims and traditional resort for many visitors until recently.
El Santuario de la Cueva Santa se encuentra situado en las inmediaciones de Montmayor. La cueva, también conocida como "del Latonero", era utilizada como refugio por los pastores. Uno de ellos debió dejar allí una imagen de la Virgen. Años más tarde, a otro pastor que pasaba la noche en la cueva se le apareció la Virgen, que le indicó dónde podía encontrar la imagen. La imagen de la Virgen María anciana con traje de viuda que, a pesar de la humedad existente en la sima, apenas se ha deteriorado tras los años transcurridos.
En el fondo de la sima existe una modesta capilla dedicada a Ntra. Sra. de la Cueva Santa, capilla construida a finales del siglo XVII con gruesos muros. Junto a la gruta, en el exterior, existe una hospedería cuya antigüedad se remonta en origen al siglo XVI. Alojamiento popular para los peregrinos y lugar tradicional de veraneo para numerosos visitantes hasta fechas recientes.
