Description

The Alós House, an example of 18th century Valencian architecture, was refurbished in 1929 and decorated with Modernist elements such as Onda ceramics or the furniture that it still has. It is of great value from an ethnographic point of view as it reveals what life was like in the 18th and 19th centuries.

The Alós-Flor House is located in Calle Santa Llúcia nº 4 in Alzira, within the area of the Historical Centre called La Vila, classified as a BIC (Bien de Interés Cultural - Asset of Cultural Interest).
It could be called Casa Alós, if we refer to the last family that inhabited it, or Casa Flor, as it is better known in the whole neighbourhood of the Vila, because it is the surname of Mr. Ramón Flor Ortells, a well-known trader and the person responsible for the important restoration carried out on this property in 1929.

One of the most important parts of this typical merchant's house is the 18th century kitchen that still preserves the fireplace and the decoration of the curious ceramic tiles that refer to the Valencian trades and customs of the time, something very similar to the kitchen that is preserved in the "Palau de la Marquesa de Carcaixent". It also has two valuable ceramic panels from the 18th century: one of "Sant Josep", and another of "Santa Catalina".

But the sentimental history of this mansion is linked to the emotional bond between the people of Alcira and their patron saint, "Sant Bernat". The reliquary image of "Sant Bernat" was hidden in this building so that it would not be destroyed in the Civil War. According to Agustín Alós, the image was moved from Santa Catalina to this hiding place before travelling to the city of Onda, thanks to José María Llopico. Once the war was over, "Sant Bernat" returned to Alzira and was exhibited for a time in a room at number 4 of "Calle Santa Llúcia".
