Description

The Great Theater of Alzira was inaugurated 100 years ago, on this day, September 29, 1921. It is located in the Plaza de l’Alborxí. It was built by the architect Emilio Ferrer and is owned by the Alzira City Council. The Great Theater of Alzira is part of the historical-artistic heritage of Alzira.

The theater was built on a 945 m² land owned by the municipality, at the request of Honorato Brunet in 1919, who presented a project by the architect Emilio Ferrer. The proposal was to build a public performance hall at a cost of 75,000 pesetas. The Municipal Corporation approved the request on June 30, 1919.

Great artists, actors, singers, journalists and people from all sectors of society have passed through the Gran Teatro alcireño.

On the stage of the theater, initially projected as a theater-circus, theatrical works and concerts of bands, ballet, orchestras and choirs, operas and zarzuelas have been performed, but there have also been fallas presentations, Valencian theater competition, political rallies, Literary Awards nights, congresses and assemblies of entities and associations, floral games, children's festivals, proclamations of Holy Week, and even boxing matches and it has been part of the cultural life of the city throughout the 20th century.

Also and even a mass in February 2009. Everything has had a place in that emblematic building that the residents of Alzira appreciate so much.

And now coinciding with the centenary of the theater, an improvement has been made to the facilities, carried out with the support of the Regional Ministry and the Provincial Council. These works have been destined to reform and improve the security of the property and incorporate new technology. Among the reforms carried out are the improvement of the electrical panel of the air conditioning, the lighting of the emergency exits, the replacement of the lights by Led lights, the renovation of the stage floor and the fireproof curtains or the conditioning of the dressing rooms.

Beyond the rehabilitation of the building, various celebratory activities have been planned, among which an exhibition of photographs and posters, a didactic guide, the publication of a book on the history of this theater and special concerts by the Musical Society of Alzira . Still, some of these activities will have to be postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

This year the City Council has published a calendar with images that show different perspectives of the theater - the façade, the stalls, the stage, the railing of the amphitheater with the coat of arms of the city, the stage of the stage box - as well as different acts that have been celebrated and different moments throughout the cultural life of the city.
