Description

Las Fallas are the festivities that are celebrated in Alzira during the month of March in honor of San José. They are the most important and important after the Valencian capital, both for its roots and centennial origin, as well as for having the largest census of falleras and falleros and commissions, which plant a total of seventy monuments in all neighborhoods of the city.

The Alzira Fallas have been declared a Festivity of National Tourist Interest since 2005, an Asset of Cultural Interest in 2015 and Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO since 2016.
The origin of the Fallas festivity dates back to the ancient tradition of the city's carpenters, who on the eve of the festival of their patron Saint Joseph, burned in front of their workshops, in the streets and public squares, the useless junk together with the wooden contraptions they used to raise the lamps that illuminated them while they worked in the winter months. For this reason, the day of the cremà (when the Fallas monuments burn) always coincided with the 19th of March, the Feast of San José.
