Description

It is one of Alzira's most emblematic monuments. It forms part of our urban landscape and has great historical and cultural significance. It is an Asset of Local Relevance and is included in the declaration of Asset of Cultural Interest of the historical complex of “La Vila”.

The Casalicios were designed by Leonardo Julio Capuz (1660-1731) but it was his disciple Francisco Vergara "el Viejo" (1681-1753) who carried out the work.

The Casalicios were completed in 1717. They were erected over the cutwaters of the already existing Bridge of San Agustín. Although this bridge soon came to be known by the people of Alzira as the Bridge of San Bernardo, as it was crowned by the
Casalicios in honour of San Bernardo and his sisters María and Gracia.

In 1966 it was dismantled to complete the project to fill in the bed of the river Júcar in order to prevent flooding, so the resulting site was occupied by the current Santos Patronos avenue. On 21st July 1967, this avenue was inaugurated and became the main road axis of Alzira. The bridge suffered the breakage and demolition of the main arch and the houses were moved to the middle of the avenue.

But under the asphalt the river followed its natural course, which, together with the constant traffic and the weak settlement of the monument, caused a process of collapse towards the outer flanks that endangered its stability.

In March 2004, therefore, work began on dismantling the monument. Initially, the images were removed, laser cleaned and restored. Then work was carried out on the architectural structure. It was a complex and delicate project that combined the restoration of the monument to its original site with its reintegration into the urban space.

On 14th December 2007 this reform was inaugurated, which returned to Alzira this monument so important to our city, a privileged setting for all our festivals and traditions.
