The monument to the Infanta Margarita is located in the Plaza de la Generalitat de Alzira. A large sculpture by the Valencian artist Manolo Valdés, inaugurated in December 2006, thanks to the collaboration of the Bancaixa Foundation.
Margarita María Teresa of Austria was the protagonist of the most outstanding works of the baroque painter Diego Velázquez, in her role as official portraitist of the monarch Felipe IV of Spain. With only 5 years old, the Infanta she posed for the famous painting “Las Meninas” or “The family of Felipe IV”. At the age of 15, she married an uncle of her, Leopold I of Habsburg and died at 21 in her fourth childbirth.
Margarita (1651-1673) was the daughter of King Felipe IV of Spain and Mariana of Austria. Nicknamed "the Infanta Margarita", she gained popularity from Velázquez's painting "Las meninas", a painting painted in 1656, considered one of the most important paintings in the history of universal art.
