Description

It is a monument erected in honour of the river Xúquer, a symbol of the natural heritage of Alzira and its region. It is a sculpture designed by the architects Félix Lahoz and Vicente Sauquillo. It is located in the most important green area of Alzira, and presides over the central walkway of the Parque de l'Alquenència.
This sculpture, which alludes to the Xúquer, shows its unpredictability, the drama of the floods and the great variety of crops that its waters offer as they pass through Alzira and its region.
This work is organised around two clearly contrasting areas.
The northern area reflects the positive side of the river, expressed through green and flowery areas, symbolising the crops grown along the banks of the Xúquer. Above this part, a partially cantilevered platform stands out on the top as a viewpoint over the crops, which symbolically represents the island of Alzira. There is also a large horizontal concrete bench as a counterpoint to the verticality of the monument.

The southern area, with its wave walls, evokes the floods and catastrophes, often associated with the Xúquer in autumn, due to the great overflows.
Alzira also has another monument in honour of the river Xúquer which is located on the Paseo Fluvial, near the fairgrounds and just a few metres from the river to which it pays homage. It is the work of the local sculptor Leonardo Borrás.
