Description

The Ojiva de Santa María is a monument located in Alzira in the surroundings of the historic center “La Vila” de Alzira. It was made with remains of the Gothic church of Santa María, a temple with a single long nave and no cloisters. Its head was oriented towards the south, one of the side doors fell to the Plaza de Santa María and the other was located at the foot of the church. Inside there were eight chapels.

Jaume I chose this temple as a possible eventual tomb if the time of his death came during his stay on the island, in Alzira.

It was built in the 13th century on one of the town's mosques.

It suffered a great deterioration during the Civil War, after which only one tower of this temple survived, which was demolished in 1957.

It is an ogival window crowned with a funerary cross and two corbels with a commemorative plaque with the following text:

<< En este lugar estuvo la Iglesia del Santísimo Cristo de la Virgen María, antigua Mezquita consagrada al culto católico, al ser conquistada la Villa de Alcira por D. Jaime I de Aragón.
Esta joya histórica se perdió para la posteridad en la primera mitad del siglo XX por la vesania de algunos y la incuria de todos.
Para perpetuar su memoria, con los restos de sus venerables piedras, se erige este monumento por iniciativa del Excmo. Ayuntamiento de Alzira.
