Description

The Tower of the Palace of Antella is the only remaining element of the old manor palace of Antella, built during the Arab settlements, of large proportions and equipped with large chambers. The stately palace stood in front of the church square, with a 34-metre façade and a rear facing the town's irrigation channel. This building, which is known to have had large rooms, its own storehouse, stables, granary, etc., is known to have been used as a palace.

It is a powerful construction with a square floor plan and about six metres on each side at its base. It has a ground floor and three storeys, a vaulted upper room and a terrace accessed by an interior spiral staircase. A small watchtower crowns the building. It is in fairly good condition, although it has not been rebuilt.

All that remains of the palace today is the tower, which is located in one of the eight dwellings that have replaced the palace. The powerful tower has a base of 6 x 5.57 metres, with walls 1.25 metres thick on the ground floor and a height of more than 32 metres. On a window lintel on this floor there is a sample of the variety of ceramic tiles that decorated the interior walls. The first room of the tower, which can be accessed from inside the semi-detached house, is 2.70 m high and has a floor area of 10.70 m2. A staircase leading to an outbuilding outside the tower enclosure leads up to the first floor of the tower, which measures 4.55 m x 5.30 m inside, down three steps of a small wooden staircase. This room, which is the highest of the four in total, ends in a vault, protected by an oval arch, and is more than 10 metres high. In the low corner that faces east and in a space of 1.45 square metres, the spiral staircase begins, which is formed by ashlar stone steps that allow us to climb up to the watchtower that crowns the top of the tower. This staircase, which receives light from the outside through two small windows, leads to the upper floor, which measures the same as the one below, but is 7 metres higher. In this room there are benches attached to the walls. You continue up the narrow staircase until you reach the top floor, which measures 5.10 x 5.83 m and has a sloping roof from the northwest with a height of 7.50 m to the southeast, which is 5 m high. From this floor there is a beautiful panoramic view from the four cardinal points, and there is a small watchtower on the roof, 1.65 metres long, from where you can see the north side, which was the only access route to the town.
