Iglesia Parroquial de Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles(Aras de los Olmos)

Building of the XVI century constructed on another building of previous date, reason why it presents parts belonging to diverse styles. It is a temple with a single nave, built with Gothic masonry and with chapels attached between the buttresses.

On the exterior, the building has two façades, one of Renaissance style, with Ionic semi-columns and a tripartite temple, and a Romanesque one, belonging to the oldest part of the building, with a more sober decoration. In addition, the bell tower stands out, approximately 30 meters high, which is formed by two bodies, one of masonry work and another of carved ashlar in the upper part, which houses eight semicircular openings that contain the bells that call to prayer, give the time, and formerly also served to give the warning in case of fire or war.

Inside, the church is richly decorated with sgraffito in gray and white tones distributed throughout the vaults and walls of the church. These sgraffiti present vegetal decorations, angels, fantastic animals, musical angels and, in addition, symbolic elements that make reference to popular religious traditions or elements of the local culture, like the two elm trees that are painted in the choir of the church, which show how for centuries there was a tradition of having an elm tree in the center of the town square.

In the church we can also find the images of various Saints, such as the paintings located on the sides of the altar representing St. Catherine of Siena and St. Catherine of Alexandria, the sculptures of Saints such as Our Lady of the Angels or Jesus Christ lying and also an interesting silver gothic cross of the tenth century.

Edificio del siglo XVI construido sobre otro edificio de anterior fecha, por lo que presenta partes pertenecientes a diversos estilos.
Se trata de un templo de nave única, construido con fábrica gótica y con capillas adosadas entre los contrafuertes.

En el exterior, el edificio presenta dos portadas, una de estilo renacentista, con semicolumnas jónicas y un remate en forma de templete tripartito, y una románica, perteneciente a la parte del edificio más antigua, de decoración más sobria. Además, destaca el campanario de 30 metros de altura aproximadamente, que está formado por dos cuerpos, uno de obra de mampostería y otro de sillería labrada en la parte superior, que alberga ocho vanos de medio punto que contienen las campanas que llaman a la oración, dan la hora, y antiguamente también servían para dar el aviso en caso de incendio o de guerra.

En su interior, la iglesia presenta una rica decoración de esgrafiados en tonos grises y blancos distribuidos por las bóvedas y las paredes de la iglesia. Estos esgrafiados presentan decoraciones vegetales, angelotes, animales fantásticos, ángeles músicos y, además, elementos simbólicos que hacen referencia a tradiciones religiosas populares o a elementos de la cultura local, como los dos olmos que se encuentran pintados en el coro de la iglesia, que muestran como ya desde hace siglos existía la tradición de tener un olmo en el centro de la plaza del pueblo.

En la iglesia podemos encontrar además las imágenes de diversos Santos, como las pinturas situadas a los lados del altar que representan a Santa Catalina de Siena y Santa Catalina de Alejandría, las esculturas de Santos como la de Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles o Jesucristo yaciente y también una interesante cruz gótica plateada del siglo X.
