Description

) The old church of Bellreguard was initially a chapel built by the third dukes of Gandía and lords of Bellreguard, of the Borja family, attached to the Collegiate Church of Gandía and with San Miguel Arcángel as titular, patron protector of the Borja family. In 1574 Archbishop Ribera made it independent of the Collegiate Church.
After the expulsion of the Moors, the arrival in Bellreguard of more Christian population made necessary a church with greater capacity. A single nave church with side chapels was built and the original chapel became the new Communion Chapel.
During the 18th century, the growth of the town made it necessary to improve the church. Thus, between 1733 and 1750, a new church was built in austere baroque style and neoclassical tendency, taking advantage of the good social and economic conditions. Between 1909 and 1929, improvement and enlargement works were carried out, promoted by the rector Vicent Moner.
During the Civil War, in November 1936, the building and the bell tower were destroyed with dynamite. It was, therefore, a planned demolition. The parish archives were also burned, and only most of the so-called Quinque Libri were saved.
The construction of the new church of Sant Miquel during the post-war period (1939-1952) was an important event in the region and significant for Bellreguard.
With the construction of the new church, the urban plan of the square and the surrounding streets was restructured. The town was organized into communes to work together. In this way two objectives were achieved: on the one hand, to save in the construction process; on the other hand, to involve the neighborhood in the construction of the parish building.
The church consists of a 20 x 40 m nave; a roof supported by 54 octagonal columns and a 40 m high bell tower, with an additional 5 meters of carillon bells and a metallic weather vane. The bell tower is one of the most unique in the region for its typology and location in the middle of the foot of the church. The bells are named Santísimo Cristo de la Misericordia, Abdón y Senén, Micaela and Divina Aurora.
