Description

In 1600, the Order of Carmel received the old hermitage of Santa Bárbara from Luis Escribano, under emphyteutic conditions, to establish a convent of monks following the old observance. This was founded in April 1603 by the prior Miguel Alfonso de Carranza, according to the minutes of the provincial chapter.

After suffering two plague epidemics in 1648 and 1670, from 1679 onwards, the prior Pedro Salvador began to renovate the old building, which was progressively extended thanks to the acquisitions and leases of land that the monks obtained from the neighbours of the nearby towns.

The typology of the convent is similar to that of other better-preserved convents, given that they followed a common pattern, with convent buildings linked to the church and articulated around the cloister. The cloister has a square floor plan with two floors and five modules per side. The lower part has semicircular arches and the upper floor has segmental arches. The round arches are arested. The entire cloister is in Tuscan style with double pilasters and friezes.

After resisting the vicissitudes of the liberal period, the order of exclaustration for the convent arrived on 13th August 1835. Finally, according to the inventory made on 4th October 1835, the properties of the disentailed convent were: "a small convent, an orchard of 7 hectares, a poor church, a field of 8 hectares...".
