Description

The novitiate building of the Handmaids of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, popularly known as Las Esclavas, was built in 1909 by the Bilbao-born Enrique Espalza, considered one of the best eclectic architects of the early 20th century and to whom we owe a large part of Bilbao´s Ensanche.

This neo-Gothic church, with other outbuildings, also serves as a spiritual house, novitiate and college. It was originally founded as a convent by nuns of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The church of the Handmaids has two beautiful twin towers with pointed, bright blue domes that reflect the sunlight. The façade is composed of statues of religious saints, with the Sacred Heart in the centre and a huge, beautiful rose window.

Inside, there are beautiful stained glass windows on both sides, a crucified Christ on the main altar and two paintings on the side altars, one of the Immaculate Conception donated by the Valencian painter Segrelles and another of St. Francis of Borgia.
