Description

The hermitage dedicated to San Juan Bautista is located in the urban center of Mirambell, next to the dry riverbed of the Carraixet. Its façade opens onto the collected Placeta de l'Ermita, while the body of the sacristy, attached to its head, falls to the street called Baixada de Carpesa.

Until 1525 the Islamic mosque of the Muslim population existed here, converted at that date into a Christian temple for the worship of the converted Moors. In 1685 the old temple was demolished to build the hermitage we know today, although throughout its history it has undergone several interventions that have changed its original appearance. Initially placed under the patronage of All Saints, it was not until 1885 when it was dedicated to San Juan Bautista.

With an elongated rectangular floor plan and plastered walls, the chapel is attached on both sides to private homes. Over the arched doorway with a brick archivolt and flanked by a reddish stone plinth there is a ceramic panel with an image of the saint and the inscription San Juan Bautista. Clavaris 1990.

The pediment ends in a straight cornice with ball ornaments at the ends and a large belfry with three openings: the upper one, smaller, is empty, while the two lower ones house two bells, both cast in 1947 and donated by the clavarios of that year, since the originals were lost during the Civil War. The larger one was baptized with the name of the titular saint, while the smaller one is called María del Pilar.
