Description

The Patio de los Silos, also known as the Patio de San Roque or simply as Los Silos, is a monument made up of a set of tanks used to store wheat for the consumption of the inhabitants of the city of Valencia and surrounding towns.
During the 16th century, the city of Valencia suffered various problems of wheat shortages due to the fact that the Kingdom of Valencia had a deficit in this product. The alternative was to promote the import of Sicilian wheat by sea, but the large quantities of wheat that reached the beach of El Grao could not be stored in the traditional botigas, or warehouses, due to their poor storage conditions. To avoid these problems, the city government (the Consell) decided to build three experimental silos in 1573, commissioned to the stonemason Sancho de Camino, to store the cereal and thus have a reserve in case of need, while at the same time making it possible to acquire wheat at the best price at source.
The choice of location was not a random decision, as the material of which the mound was made, in addition to the slightly higher altitude with respect to the capital, gave it more appropriate characteristics to keep the wheat in excellent condition for a longer period of time.
