Description

The Borja Tower and Walls are located in the village of Canals, Valencia. The tower consists of a square floor plan and three storeys, although the last one was demolished in the 19th century. Its original access was through a semicircular ashlar arch on the first floor, which was the usual form of access to defence towers because it allowed them to be isolated by simply removing the access ladder. It is built entirely of stone and masonry.

On the basis of the remains found, its construction is dated to the 13th century during the Muslim period. After the Reconquest, the fortification was initially abandoned without use, but in the 14th century a Gothic palace was built, reusing the Muslim tower and part of the wall. This palace belonged to the Borja family, owners of the Barony of La Torre. Calixto III is one of the members of this family born in this building. In 1506 it was sold, together with the Barony, to the town council of Játiva. The town council of Setabuta was the owner of the building during the following centuries, during which the palace gradually fell into ruin. In 1758 it was necessary to restore it. In 1847 the building, once again in ruins, was sold by the town council of Játiva to various private individuals. Finally, Canals Town Council acquired the tower and restored it in 1995, removing the buildings that had been attached to the tower.
