Description

Its location 360 m from the coast was due to the lack of consistency of the land, looking for a more solid area.
It was lit in 1904 (in the writings on lighthouses it is always referred to as "lighting of the lighthouse" to refer to the date of entry into operation, never "inauguration"). The first lighthouse plan in Spain dates from the middle of the 19th century, with the arrival of the technological advances of the Industrial Revolution and the liberal currents. The Canet lighthouse belongs to the 1902 Lighthouse Plan. Formerly the signal towers of ports and orographic accidents were fed by means of bonfires and lanterns generated by coal or firewood. At the end of the 19th century refined petroleum was used to feed the light, at the same time that the use of electrical energy was initiated.
The lighthouse of Canet at first worked with petroleum and in 1922 it was electrified with a filament bulb and a generator. On October 24, 1936, due to the civil war, the lighthouse was turned off to preserve it, although it was used to house a place of observation and a telephone exchange, from where all the batteries of the area were coordinated.
The operator (torrero or lighthouse keeper) is an irreplaceable part of the lighthouse. He has to watch night and day, that is why lighthouses usually include attached dwellings in their layout. The lighthouse of Canet corresponds to the typology of a rectangular building, with a lateral tower in the center of one of the sides and a central courtyard that connects with the tower. The tower is truncated cone-shaped, tiled, 30 m high on an octagonal base of ashlars. Access to the top of the lighthouse is by means of a spiral staircase with 140 steps.
At present the lighthouse of Canet is property of the Port Authority of Valencia, and it is catalogued in the PGOU of Canet as an Asset of Local Relevance.
