Description

The town of Chelva, located in the region of the Serranos, has a population of 2211 inhabitants settled in its more than 10 neighborhoods framed in different frames throughout history, from the first Iberian and Roman settlements, then passing through the Muslim and Christian civilizations, although Chelva was populated since the Bronze Age, as is deduced from archaeological finds, possibly in another location other than the current one.

The settlements in the Iberian period have left evidence in numerous sites such as the Iberian-Roman tower or turret, reused by Arabs and Christians and stoically endured the Carlist clashes, as its structures are still preserved.

Of all the current neighborhoods, the oldest is that of the Petrosa, located just below the great rock of rough stone, sheltered from the north winds. Close to the rivers Chelva and Turia, it enjoys a southern orientation, which gives the neighborhood excellent solar conditions when the cold winters arrive.

The Roman origin of the town of Chelva is uncertain. However, the existence of Roman place names in the region of the Serranos, such as Alpuente (Altum pontum) or Domeño (Dominium or Damanium) and the presence of the size and dimensions of the Peña Cortada aqueduct leads us to suspect the presence of a workers' and military camp, which would be of great proportions and of long duration.
