Description

The Arab Cistern of Cuart de Poblet is an old Arab cistern, located in the church square of Cuart de Poblet. It has been declared a site of cultural interest.
The building is divided into two parts with different functions: a staircase that gives access to the fountain where the water was loaded. On the other hand, there is the reservoir itself, which is a rectangular room covered by a barrel vault and with two openings for the water to enter.
The tank was lined with lime, a lining that was renewed annually in summer for hygienic reasons. The whole is excavated and is below street level. It reaches seven metres below the church square.
The dimensions of the cistern are 15.25 m by 6.5 m and seven metres high.
Both the staircase and the tank are covered by a barrel vault. The floors of the staircase and the cistern are built of brick.
At the beginning of the 21st century a new opening was added to connect the cistern with the exterior to allow it to be used as an exhibition hall.
According to different sources, the origin of the cistern is attributed to the Visigoths (7th century)3 or to the Muslims.
