Description

Another of the archaeological references that we find in the surroundings of the lighthouse of Cullera is the site of the volcano cave. It is one of the important sites to know the human presence in the Paleolithic of the Valencian Community.

One of the works to know the site is the work of José Aparicio Pérez entitled "La cueva del volcán del Faro" where a description and evaluation of the findings of the archaeological excavation initiated by the prehistoric service of the Diputación de Valencia in 1968 is made. Prior to this work, the author highlights the previous visits made by Alfredo His and Domingo Fletcher where they found a bone awl, a copper awl and a silex knife, a circumstance that helped them to value the importance of carrying out an archaeological excavation in this place. The cave of the Volcano of the Lighthouse of Cullera is located at a height of 122 meters above sea level in the eastern part of the mountain of Cullera and distant from the current Lighthouse in just 1 kilometer away.

Like other existing sites in the Cullera Lighthouse, the construction works of urbanizations alerted the prehistoric service of the Diputación de Valencia about its risk of disappearance. Thus, a first excavation was carried out in 1968 and a second one in the summer of 1969. In the first excavation, ceramic remains and arrowheads from the Bronze Age were found. During this excavation, about 11 meters of the cave were analyzed. During the 1969 excavation, a greater exploration was carried out, reaching a depth of 30 meters, and the most important remains corresponding to the Upper Paleolithic, specifically, to the period known as the Magdalenian period, were found. Burins, arrowheads, awls, awls, rods and worked stone elements were found, as well as a bone staff.
