Description

The sanctuary of the Virgen del Castillo de Cullera was built in neo-Byzantine style between 1891 and 1897, it housed a community of Franciscan priests until 2007 and, as explained in the ceramic altarpiece, it was built, in large part, thanks to the efforts of the people of the town. On the main façade stands the sturdy bell tower with a cupola of glazed tiles with a coppery reflection. In the entrance hall you can admire a plinth with ceramic altarpieces from the 18th and 19th centuries.
This valuable collection of ceramic altarpieces from the old hermitage, which has been here since 1925 - although the Sanctuary was built between 1891 and 1897 - depicts the miracles of the Virgin of the Castle. Thanks to its transfer to the vestibule, this beautiful plinth can now be seen before the entrance to the new Sanctuary.
In the presbytery of the Sanctuary of Cullera is the chapel with the throne and an image of the Virgin from the 15th century.

The legend of the Virgin of the Castle:
There is a legend associated with the Virgen del Castillo, according to which, a shepherd from Utiel who was grazing his flock in the ravine of the hermitage of Santa Marta heard a noise coming from a rock, near a cave.
When he approached he found two images of the Virgin. One of them was missing an arm and this was the one he gave to the clergy of Cullera. The other, the complete one, he took it to his parish of origin, that is to say, to Utiel. When worship was opened in both churches the following day, it was found that they had changed towns, so that the complete one had returned to Cullera and the incomplete one appeared in the parish church of the Utiel shepherd.
The image of the Virgen del Remedio, patron saint of Utiel is small in size and is very similar to the larger Virgen del Castillo in Cullera. It is most likely that both were sculpted by the same sculptor.
