Description

The Marenyet Tower of Cullera is an ancient watchtower built in 1577 during the reign of Philip II for the control and defense of the Mediterranean coast, frequently attacked by Barbary pirates. It was part of the network of watchtowers that were built along the Valencian coast.
The tower was located at the mouth of the river in order to protect the access to the river port and to prevent the watering of enemy ships. It was located in a marshy area, hence the name "Marenyet", until a flood in 1864 diverted the riverbed further north. The function of control and coastal surveillance was carried out by soldiers or "atalladors". The tower of the Marenyet de Cullera is of truncated cone shape, made of rough masonry. It has a perimeter of 10 meters in diameter and 15 meters high. It consists of a first floor, two floors with a spiral staircase and a crenellated terrace. On the first floor were located the stables, the house on the second floor, on the second floor the gunpowder store and on the terrace was located, in the eighteenth century, an iron cannon of six pounds caliber. The tower has been completely restored and has been declared an Asset of Cultural Interest.
