Optical telegraphy is an invention that dates back to the century of the Enlightenment, the 18th century. It was a technological advance of great importance, born in France, which facilitated the rapid transmission of news in an unknown way.
In Spain, optical telegraph lines were not erected until the 1840s, at a time when electric telegraphy was already in operation in Europe. For security reasons, this last type of telegraphy was discarded due to the danger of cables being cut by bandits or insurgents.
The first news of the use of telegraphy appeared in the press in the Gaceta de Madrid on 14 October 1794, but it was a simple experiment carried out from the Retiro astronomical observatory and points on the outskirts of the city.
The first line to operate in Spain was due to the enlightened Agustín de Bethencourt, who had learned about the invention in France. In 1799, the construction of the Madrid-Cádiz optical telegraph line was approved, although it only went as far as Aranjuez. This system differed from Chappé's French system.

La telegrafía óptica es un invento que se remonta al siglo de la Ilustración, el siglo XVIII. Fue un avance tecnológico de gran importancia, nacido en Francia, que facilitó la rápida transmisión de noticias de manera desconocida.
En España las líneas de telégrafo óptico no se levantaron hasta la década de 1840, época que ya en Europa empezaba a funcionar la telegrafía eléctrica. Por motivos de seguridad se desechó este último tipo de telegrafía dado el peligro de corte de cables por bandoleros o insurgentes.
La primera noticia aparecida en la prensa sobre el uso de la telegrafía fue en la Gaceta de Madrid el 14 de octubre de 1794 pero se trató de un simple experimento efectuado desde el observatorio astronómico del Retiro y puntos de la periferia.
La primera línea que funcionó en España se debe al ilustrado Agustín de Bethencourt que había conocido el invento en Francia. En 1799 se aprueba la construcción de la línea de telégrafo óptico Madrid-Cádiz aunque se hizo sólo hasta Aranjuez. Este sistema difería del francés de Chappé.
