Antigua Estación Ferroviaria(Gandia)

We advance along the Ronda de Venecia protected by the wall that separates us from the port warehouses until we reach Levante street, where we turn right to reach an old railway station and some disused rails that remind us of the important role that this means of transport played for the economic development of the city. The Alcoy - Gandía line was an axis of prosperity that linked both Valencian cities and brought them into the 20th century.

The need of providing coal and raw materials (dyes, cotton, etc.) to the textile industry of Alcoi and of opeThe need to supply the Alcoy textile industry with coal and raw materials (dyes, cotton, etc.) and to open a port connection to the outside world, due to the orography of the city of Alcoy, led to the creation of the Alcoy - Gandía railway line, an efficient means of transport for importing raw materials and exporting the products of the Alcoy textile industry. The last journey of the so-called "xixarra" train took place on 15 April 1969.

Avanzamos por la Ronda de Venecia protegidos por el muro que nos separa de las naves portuarias hasta la calle Levante, por la que giramos a la derecha para llegar a una antigua estación ferroviaria y unos raíles en desuso que nos recuerdan la importancia que este medio de transporte tuvo para el desarrollo económico de la ciudad. La línea Alcoy – Gandía fue un eje de prosperidad que hermanó ambas ciudades valencianas y las introdujo de lleno en el siglo XX.

La necesidad de suministrar carbón y materias primas (tintes, algodón, etc.) en la industria textil alcoyana y de abrir una conexión portuaria hacia el exterior, dado la orografía de la ciudad de Alcoy, crearon la línea férrea Alcoy – Gandía, un medio de transporte eficiente para importar materias primas y exportar los productos de la industria textil alcoyana. El último viaje del denominado tren “xixarra” se realizó el 15 de abril de 1969.
