Description

The Collegiate Church of Santa María la Mayor is an impressive construction in the Catalan-Aragonese Gothic style. Located in the heart of the city centre, the Main Square (Plaza Mayor).
Its construction began in the 14th century, promoted by the first royal duke Alfonso de Aragón el Vell, thus replacing the primitive church. The Santa Maria or Mercat door, a work of Pere Balaguer (also the author of the Serrano Doors in Valencia), stands out in this first stage.

Later, during the Borgia period, it was the daughter-in-law of Pope Alexander VI and Duchess Regent of Gandia, María Enríquez de Luna, who was in charge of finishing, in a second phase, the work begun by the royal duke Alfons el Vell. In this last phase, the Apostles´ Gate was erected - the work of Damià Forment - and this second section of the building was the work of Pere Compte (also the author of the Lonja de la Seda in Valencia).

The church acquired the rank of collegiate church in 1499, by papal bull of Pope Alexander VI.
