Description

Between the crowded northern beach of Gandia and the first buildings in the municipality of Xeraco, two kilometers of sand have survived the urban pressure that characterizes the Mediterranean coasts. L’Auir, in the region of La Safor, is one of the few unspoilt beaches on the Valencian coast that preserves the dune system intact. It is named after an ancient canal from the 12th century, which ran through some rural areas of the municipalities of Gandia, Xeresa and Xeraco. In the first line, herbaceous species grow, responsible for accumulating sand thanks to an extensive root system. In later areas, the substrate is better fixed thanks to the woody plants. Next is the brackish area where reeds grow, and finally a typical Mediterranean forest with pines and mastic trees. Urban pressure and intense tourist uses have led to a radical alteration of the sandy coasts. In the Auir, you can still enjoy a redoubt of this practically lost habitat, as long as you pass through the enabled spaces, without smashing the dunes and with a deep respect for what they house and represent.
