Description

The exact dating of the construction of the Bellús canal is still unknown due to the few references and data that exist.

The historian Mariano González Baldoví affirms that it was built prior to the 12th century, since it is known that King James I granted in 1264 the use of some baths and a fountain in the location where the fountain of the twenty-five spouts is currently located.

But the most enlightening fact of the possible origin prior to the conquest of the canal lies in the siege to which Xàtiva was subjected by King James I. This was located in a strategic place called L 'Ambastida. This mound is located between the river Albaida and the "Arcadetes d' Alboi" so that it had dominated the arrival of water to the Islamic city.

However, other historians, such as Martí de Viciana (1563) and Francisco Diago {1613) mainly place its construction after the Christian conquest of the area. The latter in a writing states:
"The city of Xàtiva undertook in past times, after the conquest to bring the fountain of Belluz, and with aver made countless expenses did not come out of this company with complete perfection, because although the source came to the city, did not seem to last business, nor came with the being that was convenient and thus by floods of water the pipe was destroyed and the water was lost near the year 1400 with great feeling of the city; because without it it was left as without life and health and beauty because in the summer the hot airs that used to refresh themselves with that divided water, for not series of damage, lost this gift and medicine. The city, having been attracted to that gift, had to make an effort to undertake that pipe again and by a different part and way so that it would be free and safe from the avenues of water, and it was found that the pipe could be carved in the same rock where the water is born and channel it right there and along the slope of the mountain ahead and it was a strange thing that there was no lack of those who undertook the construction of the pipe to the city for one thousand five hundred guilders; He undertook it at the end in 1407 and finished it in two and a half years at the beginning of April 1410, which was a diligence of esteem.
