Description

The optical telegraphy tower is located at the top of the Alto La Torre or Alto del Herrero, an elongated mound 380m above sea level, about 1,500m west of the town of Godelleta and about 200m northeast of the CV-424 road.

Architectural characteristics:
The tower has a square plan and three floors, ataluzada base of approximately 6.4 x 6.4m and approximately 4.3 x 4.3m in the inner square. The walls have a thickness in the slope of 0.95m at the base and 0.70m at the height of the loopholes and 0.50m in the walls. The door is not at ground level so the first floor has no openings, except for the three loopholes on each side.

The access door is on the second floor facing west with a window on the opposite wall. The upper floor has two windows, as well as the mark of the floor slabs. The walls are made of faced stone with lime mortar. The corners, window openings and horizontal moldings are made of solid brick.

History: Optical telegraphy systems were born at the end of the 17th century as a faster alternative to horseback messengers.
The first projects in Spain are due to Agustín de Betancourt, appointed by Charles IV to build the Madrid-Cádiz line, of which only the section to Aranjuez was built.

In 1844 the Government of Spain commissioned Colonel José Mª Mathé to create a vast network connecting Madrid with all the provincial capitals, but only the lines to Irún, Cádiz and La Junquera via Valencia and Barcelona were completed.
Thus, the Godelleta tower, like those of Requena, Buñol, Chiva or Almenara belong to this project. They all have the same structure: three floors, seven meters on each side and twelve meters high. The distance between them is between two and three leagues, about 10-11 kilometers.

They came into operation in 1849, when the first electric telegraphy lines were already being installed, which made the optical tower system obsolete, so that they ceased to fulfill their mission around 1857.
