Description

In 1979, construction work near the beach of Albir uncovered the remains of bones from a Roman burial site. During the eighties and nineties of the 20th century, archaeological excavations uncovered a site of great patrimonial and scientific wealth, consisting of an extensive necropolis, a mausoleum and a villa. The whole complex has been dated between the 4th and 7th centuries AD. The Villa Romana de l'Albir Open Air Museum, the first of its kind to be declared by the Generalitat Valenciana, was inaugurated on 26 March 2011.
Since its opening, guided tours have been organised for groups, schools and civic associations and, as part of the Estiu Festiu Festival, music concerts and other cultural events are held in its facilities, which are very well received by the public.
In the Museum you can visit the thermal baths of the villa through an Augmented Reality virtual guide and learn about the ritual of the convivium, the Roman banquets, through a 360 Virtual Reality video. The visit continues in the mausoleum, a funerary building that contained the burials of an important family, possibly the owners of the villa. This centre has been awarded Blue Centre status for the year 2021 and with this, l'Alfàs del Pi has been awarded seven blue distinctions.
