Description

The Ermita del Cristo del Calvario is a temple located in Calle de la Ermita, in the municipality of Alcudia de Crespins. It was built in 1774 as a dedication to the Santísimo Cristo del Monte Calvario, at the request of Cristóbal Crespí de Valldaura, Count of Orgaz, Count of Orgaz. During the War of Independence it was used as a barracks by the French troops and was plundered, so it had to be rebuilt. The chapel dates from the early 19th century. It was enlarged in 1967 and has subsequently undergone other interventions that have contributed to the good state of conservation of the hermitage and Calvary as a whole.

The church occupies a small square with steps. It is Doric in style, with a Latin cross floor plan and a linteled wooden door with shutters. Above it is a modern ogival-shaped ceramic altarpiece. On both sides there are iron lanterns and, above the opening, a latticed window. The triangular pediment is topped by a square belfry with a bell. The whole is surmounted by a sculpture of Jesus Christ.

The interior is covered with a half-barrel vault in two sections with lunettes. It has a transept with a blind dome on pendentives, ribs and a central rosette. The modern altar is free-standing. The plaster altarpiece houses a niche of the patron saint, in polychrome wood, and is a copy of another 17th century image that was brought from Sardinia by the Count of Orgaz. Below the Christ there is an image of the Sorrowful Virgin.
