Description

The Torre del Virrey or Torre de Babà is part of an estate located approximately half a kilometre from the town centre of L'Eliana. It was originally built between the 16th and 17th centuries and its function was to serve as a watchtower and defence tower for the farmhouse and the rural area where it is located. Several rural houses were added to the complex, forming a small hamlet.

The first inhabitant of the Viceroy's Tower was Joan Baptista de Babà, General Treasurer of the Holy Cross of Valencia and its former kingdom. The Babà family lived in the building until the end of the 18th century, when it was bought by Vicent Tamarit Pastor and his wife, the 2nd Marquise of San Joaquín Pastor. The current appearance of the estate, including the tower, dates from the first half of the 19th century, when it was acquired as a summer residence by Félix María Calleja del Rey (1750-1828), Count of Calderón and Viceroy of Mexico. With the purchase, the farmhouse and the Babà tower were completely rebuilt, combining Gothic and classical styles according to the taste of the time.

During the 20th century, the Viceroy's Tower deteriorated, a situation that worsened in the 1970s with the collapse of the roof and part of a wall of the tower. It was not until 1991, when it became the property of the Town Council of L'Eliana, that the first restoration works were carried out through its Workshop School, which lasted until the first decade of the 21st century.
