Description

The origin of this temple dates back to medieval times, specifically to the 14th century when the lord of the town, Pere de Montagut i Vilanova founded a hospital whose chapel was dedicated to San Antonio Abad. However, the chapel does not appear in documentary sources until the 16th century, and the date of 1699 that can be read on its façade must refer to some important refurbishment that gave it the appearance we know today.

Since then it has survived successive historical vicissitudes that have given it a wide range of functions, from prison to school. It has also been restored on several occasions, the last of which was in 2002, an intervention financed with funds from the Provincial Council and voluntary contributions from neighbours. It is currently in perfect condition, although in a decontextualised environment, as the hospital of which it formed part disappeared in the mid-19th century and became part of the urban growth of the town.

The façade is plain and simple with a beautifully gilded lintelled door, highly decorated with engravings and displaying the date 1699. Above it there is a modern ceramic altarpiece with an image of the saint - which replaced a niche image in a niche - and a wrought-iron lantern. Above it is a glazed rectangular window. The triangular pediment is truncated by the small belfry with its bell with the inscription Jesus, Joseph and Mary, a post-Civil War ensemble.
