Description

We are in front of the chimney belonging to an industrial set that is very altered by later constructions, partially demolished and in a very bad state of conservation. Of the whole set, the element that is preserved in a perfect state is the chimney.

It sits on an octagonal base with vertical walls, while the barrel, also octagonal in section, adopts a truncated cone shape to prevent the entry of cold air through the upper part and thus facilitate a current of air by thermal inversion. The scarce ornamental repertoires are concentrated, as usual, in the transition point between the base and the octagonal trunk and in the upper finial. A cornice with dentils crowns the lower body. At the top we find a crown formed by two brick moldings.

These industrial chimneys were conceived when steam was applied to the industry based on the experience provided by the domestic chimneys. That is why they use fired tile as a basic material, which is a good thermal insulator. Its section, which decreases from the base to the top considering the influence of the cold air of the atmosphere on the hot gases coming from the combustion, allows to keep an ascending current of sufficient strength to overcome the current of the cold air masses.
