Description

Located on Monte Santo, named after the Miracle of the Corporals which took place, according to various historical sources from 1239 during the Reconquest. It was of great importance as it became a religious landmark. Nowadays it is also a landscape and natural reference point due to the large pine forest that surrounds it and the centenary carob tree in front of it.

The convent was owned by the Dominicans and with the confiscation of Mendizábal it passed into private hands. It was built in 1422 when Olf de Proxita gave the religious community the land to build it and the endowment for its maintenance, the place where the Miracle of the Corporals took place. It was very popular when it became a university with the capacity to train religious in arts and theology around 1475. In the following two centuries, the monastery reached its splendour when it became a seminary for the missionary friars in America. The monastery is a group of buildings resulting from the extensions demanded by the development of the conventual and cultural life of the monastery and they respond to the prevailing styles at the time of its construction.

During the War of the Spanish Succession, a fire destroyed almost everything. What we can see today corresponds to the reconstruction carried out in the 18th century. The square cloister dates from the 18th century with five semicircular arches supported by pilasters. They open onto a gallery with an enervated vault, the upper part of which is closed. On the western side is the chapter house. Attached to this block are the various rooms used to house the novices, tombs, barns, paintings, wine cellar, courtyards, etc.

Known as the convent, this historic building has been part of Llutxent for a long time. After many years of abandonment, it is now experiencing a period of splendour once again, with the help of the Diputación, the Town Council and other organisations that are trying to turn it into a cultural centre of international renown.
