Description

The Plaça del Pou. This triangular square is located in the deepest part of the town, with a central garden surrounded by the streets. Today, it combines various construction models, such as historic houses from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, flats from the 1980s and even single-family houses from the 1990s. Nowadays, it still has the well, in the centre of the landscaped space with benches, where 5 ornamental palm trees stand out. This square has had many names:
In the 17th century, Plaça dels Prats , because of the communal lands next to it.
Santa Catalina
Vicent Gimeno, the architect of the raising of the well.
José Antonio Primo de Rivera, was its name after the war and until democracy.
Plaça del Pou is its current name.
In 1902, work was carried out to align the square. In 1917, due to the lack of continuous water, for reasons of drought, and in order to avoid infections, it was decided to build an artesian well in the square. The Plaza del Pou was a place for socialising and conviviality where the women met when they went with their water jugs to fetch water, and where it was also a place of distraction and a meeting place. Nowadays, three Canary Island palm trees form the vertex of the central pedestrian triangle, giving a naturalistic look to the whole of the well. The others, of autochthonous character, are to complete the landscape.
